As we welcome warmer days and longer evenings, here’s a quick update on what’s happening in and around Ward 10 and across Barrie:
New Recreation Centre Coming!!
I’m thrilled to share that a new community recreation centre has finally been announced, strategically located at McKay Road East and Huronia Rd —delivering on a key commitment I made during my campaign. This facility, located on a 100-acre site, will bring much-needed amenities to our growing south end and offer space for sports, programming, and connection. Huge win for our community!
Help Identify Conservation Lands in Ward 10
The City is creating a Municipal Conservation Land Trust to protect natural spaces. Residents are invited to suggest lands for long-term protection. In Ward 10, that could include well-loved areas like Wilkins Walk or other green spaces. Submit your ideas at Conservation Trust | Building Barrie or reach out to me directly.
Ward Boundary Review – Ward 10 in Focus
With Ward 10 now the most populous in Barrie, the City is reviewing all ward boundaries to ensure fair and effective representation. Several preliminary options are being explored. I encourage you to learn more and share your thoughts at BuildingBarrie.ca/WardsReview.
Strong Mayor Powers – Used Collaboratively in Barrie
I know there have been questions about how strong mayor powers are being used locally. In Barrie, Mayor Nuttall has consistently taken a collaborative approach—engaging Council on major decisions and ensuring shared input on city priorities. While the powers are available under provincial legislation, they’ve largely been used to streamline administrative processes, not bypass Council debate.
Red Light Cameras – Under Review
Council recently passed a motion to explore the use of red light cameras to improve intersection safety. These cameras are permitted under provincial law anywhere in the city, not just in school zones like ASE (automated speed enforcement). Staff will report back with feasibility and location options.
Line Painting Season Has Begun
Barrie’s annual road line painting program is now underway. Crews typically work overnight to minimize disruptions. If you notice areas with faded lines that impact safety or visibility, feel free to flag them to me.
City-County Boundary Discussions
The City is in early-stage discussions with Oro-Medonte and Springwater regarding boundary adjustments to support future growth and service delivery. These talks are exploratory and intended to ensure long-term planning aligns with infrastructure and housing needs. No decisions have been made, and public input will be essential.
Heart Hub + Funding to Address Encampments
Council recently received an update on the proposed Heart Hub—a centralized access point for health, housing, and social supports. This project is part of a broader response to encampments in city parks and the need for coordinated services.
The Province has also provided new funding to support temporary shelter spaces and the safe removal of encampments—ensuring help is available for those in crisis while keeping our public spaces safe and accessible for everyone. (75% of individuals who were residing in Berczy Park and offered alternate shelter options have now secured permanent housing)
New Metro Now Open!
A much-anticipated addition to the south end: the new Metro grocery store at Yonge & Big Bay Point is now open! It brings more shopping convenience and local jobs to our growing neighbourhood.
