Barrie Ward 10 Community News and Updates

Barrie Ward 10 Newsletter: Week of March 31, 2025

Spring is officially here, but the ice storm reminded us that Mother Nature still has some surprises in store! I hope you and your family are safe and managing well after the storm. If you’re looking for updates on cleanup efforts and support, the City has shared helpful information here: barrie.ca/alerts/ice-storm.

As we move into a new season, here are some highlights of what’s happening at City Council and across Ward 10:

Community Fund Projects in Ward 10

I’m excited to share that our Ward 10 Community Fund projects have received final approval! These investments will improve the functionality and enjoyment of our local parks and trails:

  • Wilkins Walk Bench: A new bench will be installed to provide a comfortable resting spot for walkers and cyclists. Have a favourite spot for the bench to go? Let me know!
  • Bike Racks: Three bike racks will be installed in different parks across the ward to encourage cycling and active transportation. Is your local park in need of a bike rack? Send me a request!
  • Golden Meadow Park Lighting: Two solar-powered light fixtures will be added to enhance the safety and usability of the park during evening hours.

Reviewing Short-Term Rentals

Council recently reviewed a staff report on Short-Term Rental Regulations. While no immediate regulatory changes were recommended, Council directed staff to return with potential strategies to address recurring issues such as noise, disruptive parties, and property misuse. Once those recommendations are shared, I’ll be sure to provide an update.

Adult School Crossing Guard Program

Council also reviewed a staff report regarding a potential Adult School Crossing Guard Program for nine school locations. Due to the cost of the program and other speed safety measures being deployed, staff did not recommend moving forward at this time.

Strategic Plan Updates

The Mayor’s Executive Committee, which I sit on, recently reviewed progress on several major initiatives. Here are the latest updates:

  • Performing Arts Centre: Updated schematic designs are in development for a proposed location near the waterfront. A report to staff is expected in May, followed by a report to Council in late July or August.
  • Sports Field Development: Staff are in ongoing discussions with the landowner of the former Barrie Central site. A report to Council is anticipated within the next two months, although timelines remain fluid.
  • Lakehead University Expansion: The City is working with Lakehead to translate academic needs into a physical space development plan. A written summary of updates will be prepared by staff shortly.
  • New South East Recreation Centre: The Ontario Land Tribunal affirmed the City’s position regarding the land needed for the project. A confidential report will be presented to Council on April 16, 2025.
  • Cadets/Southshore Revitalization: Design and construction planning is underway for relocating the Sea Cadets to the General John Hayter Southshore Community Centre. Staff are working to minimize disruptions for current facility users, and a report is expected before the summer break. The relocation is anticipated to be complete by the end of the 2026 boating season.

If you have specific questions about any of these projects, feel free to reach out—I’ll be happy to discuss them further!

Planning Ahead: New Subdivisions in Ward 10

Two new subdivisions in Ward 10 are in the planning stages:

  • 912 Lockhart Road
  • 989 Mapleview Drive East

I’ll be setting up a meeting in the coming weeks to go over the plans and will share updates over the coming months.

Thank you for staying engaged and informed! As always, I’m here to answer questions and bring your feedback forward.
